Been back on a big music book kick again this summer. The SST book was a great companion to the early 2000s tome Our Band Could Be Your Life by Michael Azzerad*, and the R.E.M. bio was a breeze. It was fascinating to read about one of my favorite all time bands going back to early high school (major label years, I know…). What a trajectory and career, with a clean end to the band. So little drama! Peter Ames Carlin also did a great Springsteen book about a decade back that is very worth reading.
I was lucky enough to see Patti Smith this spring for the first time and the ticket came with a copy of her new book. I’ve only read her essential Just Kids, so I’m really looking forward to that one.
For a little fiction fix, I’ve been picking up George Saunders’ Liberation Day. I love his short stories and just saw that he’s coming to town this fall for a discussion with my former writing professor/great author in her own right (write?), Julie Schumacher!
